Currently serving as the Coordinator of the Music Industry program at Benedict College, Dr. Hutchens is devoted providing transformative experiences within the music industry to his students. At Benedict College he teaches courses in Audio Recoring, Post Production, Scoring For Film and Multimedia, Electronic Computer Music, Music Business, Commercial Music Ensemble, Live Event Production/Management, Copyright, Licensing, and Publishing, and coordinates the music industry internship program. Many his students have had internships and/or mentorships in locations such as Zync Music, the HBCU in LA program, Flavorlab, WellDunn, Colonial Life Area, the National Blues Museum, and Music Matters inc. Dr. Hutchens’ students frequently work alongside the Music Experience and American Musical Supply at music festivals produced by Danny Wimmer Presents.s
At Benedict, Dr. Hutchens is involved with the Propel Impact grant where he coordinates the Music Industry involvement and collaboration with industry partners such as Apple, Roc Nation, Young Guru, and more. Throughout the grant process Andrew has expanded the Music Industry program by renovating the studio; creating a new computer lab with 12 new iMacs with industry leading DAWs, Plugins, and MIDI controllers; integrating a Dante Network into the music industry facility; and creating an outreach throughout the Benedict and greater Columbia community of independent artist who wish to record. Through this he founded the Tiger Tempo Showcase, an event that fosters the content creation scene on the campus of Benedict College. This monumental event launched the inaugural commercial music ensemble, which combined cutting edge performance technology and commercial production to collaborate with local artists arranging their original content. The 2024 Tiger Tempo Showcase encapsulates the creation scene alongside renowned composer Nathan Felix, as students collaborated on immersive compositions in various genres. s
As an educator, Dr. Hutchens has sparked many partnerships. In addition to his work with Danny Wimmer Presents and the Music Experience, he fostered a unique collaboration with Splice, Simply Soundless, and many other companies to help further the development of the music industry program. As an advocate for the incorporation of AI technologies within the classroom, Dr. Hutchens has leveraged his partnership with Splice for generative AI to become a staple within a music industry curriculum, while also consulting with their educational team. He was recently quoted by DJLife Mazagine, Rekkerd.org, and the Splice CEO in articles about his implantation of Splice’s AI technology, Create, within a music industry curriculum. He has presented on the Incorporation of Artificial Intelligence within a Music Industry Curriculum at the HBCU Faculty Development Network Conference in Houston, Texas and will present on his incorporation of AI and VR in experiential learning projects within Music Industry education at the Austin, Texas Apple campus in May 2024.
Andrew currently serves as a music technology advisor for many area high school marching bands, often creating small soundscapes for shows. Additionally, he maintains a small studio of students who wish to further their skills in music technology.
Aside from his work at Benedict College, Andrew continues to record and produce audio and video productions. He has acted as an audio engineer for productions for the University of South Carolina, Allen University, and Benedict College. Although primarily focusing in the classical and contemporary music realm, he has recorded and produced many independent artists throughout the Carolinas, many of which have gone on to become responsive content creators. As a classical and contemporary music engineer he has recorded individuals such as Daniel Myers, Alissa Castro-Evans, H Wade Johnson, Clifford Leaman, The Benedict College Jazz Ensemble and Concert Bands, and independent artists in the greater Columbia area including Winners of the BC’s Got Talent Competitions. Additionally Andrew works many Live Events including the Harambe International Festival, EICOP HBCU in LA Tour, and Script-readings for Hollywood Productions such as Bohemia where he is responsible for both live sound production and live audio recording production on the backend.
Andrew is currently working on two self produced albums, one solo album and one with his saxophone and percussion duo, the Hutchens/Myers Duo. These albums consist of new works that were commissioned specifically for the albums.

Live Sound Reinforcement
Andrew functions as a live sound engineer and educator for many mainstream and local commercial events within the Columbia, SC and Benedict College Communities. Recently he spearheaded a collaborative live event between the music Industry and Mass communication areas of Benedict college. The Tiger Tempo Showcase is a collaborative event that brings together students and faculty from multiple disciplines to to produce, market, and capture the essence of the entertainment industries. Students engage with artists on various levels to transform original content into a live production while incorporating marketing, management, and live sound reinforcement strategies. The 2023 Tiger Tempo Showcase featured seven artists’ original content, which was arranged into a live ensemble medium. Students engaged with guest producer Guru on issues such as song form, production, live sound mixing, and artist marketing. The event was headlined by local artists, H3RO and the Villains, who engaged with students about their independent marketing and sound techniques. This event was live mixed by Andrew along side his students within the music industry area of Benedict College.
